SMSA Paintballing Tournament
Date: 1 April 2006
Venue: National Paintball Games, Strines
Before the end of our term holding the post in SMSA, Special Task bureau planned to organize a trip during Easter break. After careful considerations, we decided to plan a Paintball trip to National Paintball Games at Strines, 30 minutes driving from University. 28 people sign-in for the trip but only 25 turn up on the day of event. The bus departed Bar One at 8.30 a.m. and departed back from Strines at 2.30p.m. Overall, the trip was a successful one since everyone participated had a joyful day and worth every penny spent for it. The only bad point for the event was only in terms of time management. The game started late which result in late finished. So the driver needed to wait for about an hour more than in the deal time.

Cheshire Oaks Shopping Trip
Date: 28th December 2005
On 28th of December 2005, SMSA through Special Task Bureau had organized a shopping trip to McArthur Glen Designer Outlet at Cheshire Oaks. The Special Task Bureau expects around 30 person will participate but only 25 people gave their name. On that day itself only 20 people turned up for the trip.
The bus that brings the participant departed at 8.30am. Although the temperature almost zero degree since the night before was snowing heavily, the participants remain optimistic that their journey will be a worthwhile one. Two hours of journey seems so short since most of us slept during the journey. After we arrived at the destination, everyone in a small group scattered around to begin their mission. They were walking for hours browsing every shop first to locate their necessities. Not forget to mention the delicious lunch surely revitalize the participants to continue walking and shopping.
At 4.30p.m. all of us already gathered at the bus with loads of bags on both hand with really satisfied face showing that the shopping trip was really a fruitful one. Everybody looked so tired after almost half a day standing and walking. The journey back took more than 2 hours and everyone seems to sleep throughout the journey back. Last but not least, Special Task Bureau can conclude that the trip was a successful one.

[ Back to top ] International Food Evening (Global Flavas)
Date: 19th November 2005
Venue: Octagon Centre

Being told to set up a stall at sudden death has triggered our adrenal glands to secrete adrenaline vigorously. Each and every one of us, Asyraf, Nazri, Amru, De'e, Aliaa and Jang embraced a very big responsibility to introduce Malaysia delicacies to people from all over the world. The echoes of ‘Malaysia Boleh!' gave us the fullest determination that we could make it.
When we first stepped into the Octagon Convocation Hall, the sense of inferiority clouded our mind as every stall was creatively decorated as it identified the uniqueness of their countries. Therefore, an idea came across that SMSA should have a ready-made decoration as an identity of Malaysia which can be used in any international event. We busied ourselves by decorating the stall and arranging the food on the table as to console and wash away the feeling of inferiority complex.
As soon as 7.15pm, people started to crowd the spaces in the hall but there was only a couple of visitors approached our stall. Luckily, a brilliant idea suddenly appeared in Amru's head that we should have a strategy to attract people's attention. We then offered ‘kuih raya' and ‘batang buruk' for free and as we expected, they were magnetized to try other Malaysian food. Nasi lemak with chicken rendang and sambal telur, laksa penang, curry puff, batik cake as well as teh tarik were the mouth-watering food that we prepared. In a very short while, we managed to get some regular customers who seemed to be addicted to our nasi lemak and batik cake. At the very last fifteen-minutes before we closed the stall, we reduced the price of anything left and it was astonishing to see more people coming and buying.
Even though we were drenched with sweat after more than three hours of hard work and fun, we were very grateful to be given the opportunity to represent Malaysia and surely it will be one of the most memorable experiences during our stay here. Hopefully, for the next events in the becoming years, more members of SMSA would offer helping hands so that the events would be more meaningful. Special thanks to the seniors who helped us in preparing the food. View pictures of the event in the member's gallery .

Fresher's Camp
Date: 1 Oct 2005
Venue: Rother Valley Country Park
Every year, Mother Nature puts on a colour in fall without fail. During last autumn we've already had a picnic at the Peak District, so why not enjoy and welcome the sauntering season again this year? This year's Freshers' Camp was certainly an experience that can never be obliterated from one's memory.
On the sunny Saturday, everybody gathered at Bar One at 8.30 a.m for the bus and by 9 a.m all were aboard for the day's new adventure, ready to head to the promised venue; the Rother Valley Country Park. By the time we reached there, everybody was already starved and so breakfast was served, before we resume with our activities.
The Rother Valley Country Park undeniably fuses together the grandness of nature with the top-notch Watersports Amenities. For the first three hours, we get to opt to enjoy the soothing lake scenery and feel the flow of refreshing air while bike riding and getting mused by the presence of tens of flocks of birds(or ducks, I might say) which scattered around the vicinity. Otherwise for those who were requiring for a more challenging form of activity, then Canoeing would be their best option.
After lunch and the afternoon prayer, we were divided into small groups and a little group discussion session was held. Then there was a game and hampers were given out to the winners. What else could make the event more meaningfull without the ever-waited routine; the day-picnic was perfected by a photography session of course!
I would dare to say that the combined effects on everybody's senses seem to be resulting in a state of blissfulness =). Thanks to all who unmistakably made the event a success. It was indeed a fresh start for everyone! =))

Moving Day with SMSA 2005
Date: 10th and 11th June, 2005 (all day)
This event was held in conjunction to clearance out of university owned accommodation. As with last years event, it was meant to help SMSA members living in university owned accommodation to move all their belongings to respective storage facilities around Sheffield. However, as the demand for this year exceeded expectations, it required two full days, i.e. the 10th and 11 of June to move out all 30 students who had requested the service. There was a minimal fee involved for participating students of 2 pounds.
The service was headed by Zuhri Md Yusoff, head of the Welfare and Academic Bureau, with the help of Ridzuan, the ex-Special Tasks Bureau of the previous committee. A 5 door vehicle was rented and was used throughout the two days. Service started as early as 8.00 am on Friday, the 10th of June, and was stopped during Jumaa't prayers. After Jumaa't prayers, the service commenced until about 10.00 pm.
The following day, service also started early, as it was the compulsory day to move out of university accommodation. However, as the vehicle rented was small, there was no room for other committee members to follow around in the vehicle to help the members move. The best we could do was to prepare the committee members to stand by at various locations that were to be the destination of the students so that they could help unload belongings from the vehicle into the houses.
If there are to be any improvements for the future, it is recommended that the vehicle rented be larger and more spacious. This way, at least two movers could be in the vehicle at any one time rather than just one. Overall, it was a successful and eventful day for all involved and all members benefited positively from this service.
